Once I read City Council District 1 candidate Terrence Hayes’ recent fundraising email to supporters titled, “Portland’s War on Cars,” I knew I had to sit down and talk with him. In this interview, I share my concerns about the way he chose to frame our transportation challenges and Terrence explained why he wrote it. But that was just the start of an interesting conversation that included exchanges on everything from the future of 82nd Avenue (he supports a dedicated bus lane) to policing (he wants more boots on the ground), local politics (he says progressives in his race are flip-flopping on public safety), and more.

Terrence Hayes is running for Portland City Council, District 1 in East Portland.. After serving 13 years in prison for attempted murder, Terrence works with the Portland Police Bureau to prevent gang and gun violence, is married with children, and runs a graffiti removal business.

July 20, 2024: Rational in Portland – Season 5, Episode 16 – Terrence Hayes for Portland City Council, District 1
Terrence Hayes is running for Portland City Council in District 1. He grew up with drug-addicted parents in the Chicago projects, and his sister is still suffering from active drug addiction. Terrence moved to Portland with his father and graduated from Jefferson High School. As a former gang member who spent 13 years in prison for attempted murder, Terrence now works to help young men avoid a lifetime of violent crime and turn their lives around. He owns a graffiti removal business and is married with children. His cousin was shot and killed by a Portland police officer. As a city council candidate, Terrence’s priority is public safety. He is endorsed by the Portland Police Association.

In this episode of the PDX Black Rose Podcast, Terrence Hayes joins Alex Gebreab and Fawn Aberson to announce his intent to run for the City Council in District 1 SE Portland, Oregon!

Hayes, a Chicago native, chairs the Focused Intervention Team Community Oversight Group. The advisory group commenced in June 2021 in response to the gun violence crisis in Portland working to reduce gun violence through prevention, intervention, and response.
